Jim’s Blog: ACC Question of the Month — What Car Should You Have Bought?

We’ve all been there: A great car comes up at a great price, but you just aren’t in a spot to do anything about it. Maybe it’s a lack of funds, maybe it’s a lack of parking places. Either way, the deal slips away, quickly becoming one of your car person regrets.

What car deals have you missed, and what were they? A 427 Cobra for $3,000 in 1973? How about a ’70 SS 454 Chevelle for $20,000 in 1998? ACC wants to know about it.

  1. The car I should have bought:
    In 1954, Lincoln, Nebraska. It was a 1938 Ford Stsndard Coupe, low mileage LOL (Little Old Lady) owned. For $200 asking, original pristine blue but extremely oxidized. I was the first to look that Saturday morning and told the lady owner I was thinking about it and would probably be back.
    When shortly after I did return she had already sold it. Bill Smith, owner of Speedway Motors, had purchased it. Very soon it was cruising the streets of Lincoln sporting a Cadillac overhead valve engine.

  2. During the summer of 1968 I had just graduated from engineering school and starting my first job. I had a very good salary, but no savings and a student loan to pay off. The local newspaper had a Mercedes 300 SL advertised for, if I remember correctly, somewhere between $2,200 and $2,500. I was trying to get a loan for it from my bank, but the process was taking too long, and the bank was hesitant because of my student loan, and the car was sold to a cash buyer for more than their asking price. I ended up buying a 1958 Mercedes 220s, a more practical and much less expensive alternative, but with no where near the appeal of the 300 SL.
